While governments across the country move to make cannabis available on a recreational basis, patients that use cannabis for medicinal purposes are being denied the same opportunity for choice and access. There will soon be an abundance of choice and access for recreational users, while medicinal users will be stuck with an archaic set of rules that limit their choice and access. We are asking our public officials at all levels of government to fix the cannabis patient paradox.

Every day, tens of thousands of Canadians use medicinal cannabis to treat a number of conditions. Whether it is to treat those with chronic pain such as arthritis, GI diseases such as Crohn's, MS, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, many cancers, mental health issues such as PTSD and a multitude of other medical conditions, everyone knows someone who could benefit from the availability of medicinal cannabis. However, for every person who uses cannabis in their treatment plan, there are several others who cannot because of the current barriers put in place by government.

Currently, medicinal cannabis is only available to patients through a mail-order system. That mail-order system forces patients into a direct relationship with licensed producers and in many cases is far too cumbersome for these patients to choose a different product if they are unhappy with their producer, especially since they may chose that original relationship blindly.

Allowing patients to fill their prescriptions at a community-based medicinal cannabis retail outlet provides the kind of choice medicinal cannabis patients want, need and arguably have an intrinsic Constitutional right to. These local community-focused medicinal cannabis outlets are convenient for patients and offer the kind of choice of products that will soon be available to recreational users.

Our campaign to fix the cannabis patient paradox is focused on all three levels of government. We are asking the following:
<ul>
 	<li>That the federal government provide the expanded ACMPR legal framework to allow community focused medicinal cannabis retail outlets.</li>
 	<li>That the federal and provincial government set up or mandate an existing regulatory federal and/or provincial authority that will oversee the various provinces network of federally regulated medicinal cannabis outlets.</li>
 	<li>That municipal governments set up committees that will license federally regulated medicinal cannabis outlets in their communities.</li>
</ul>
As a government representative, we are specifically asking you to do the following:
<ul>
 	<li>Recognize that medicinal cannabis patients should be treated with fairness and respect and will not necessarily be well served by the new and varying recreational cannabis systems from province to province.</li>
 	<li>Support and legally permit, under the federal medical cannabis laws, community based retail outlets to sell medicinal cannabis, which will ensure reasonable access and choice for federally registered patients.</li>
 	<li>Initiate a public consultation with cannabis patients and licenced operators to ensure that the regulatory burden faced by users of medical cannabis are significantly reduced.</li>
</ul>
We applaud the direction the country is going with respect to cannabis. We just need to fix the cannabis patient paradox so that medical cannabis patients are made a national priority, that their constitutional rights are protected and that they are treated fairly and with respect.
